I live with my partner Abi (who practices Emotional Freedom Techniques), our 7 year old daughter Alice and our cats!
I offer patients a friendly, professional service, with the benefit of skills developed over more than 20 years of clinical experience. Traditional acupuncture is truly holistic in its scope and treatments are highly individualised to reflect the specific needs of each patient.
Please see the contact page for directions to the clinic and details of how to get in touch via email. Any enquiries please call the number above.
These are Traditional Japanese Acupuncture's main qualities:
- The use of exceptionally fine needles
- Completely painless needle techniques
- Suitable even for very sensitive patients
- Comprehensive traditional diagnosis based on medical history, pulse, abdominal and tongue diagnosis which correlates the patient's constitution to their current symptoms.
- The patient's current root constitutional weakness is treated according to ancient classical medical principles, thereby greatly enhancing the overall effectiveness of treatment.
- Diagnosis is re-evaluated at the start of each session to ensure each treatment is relevant to and reflects the patient's current needs.
- Treatments are thereby tailored to the individual patient and are refined and adapted as the patient's condition improves.
- Lifestyle advice, when appropriate, is also thereby tailored to the individual very specifically.
- Refinements in diagnostic and treatment procedures are constantly being made in the light of the extremely high standards set by contemporary Japanese master acupuncturists.
- Can be used preventatively or with a view to enhancing performance in sport and creative arts.
By contrast it takes a minimum of three years of study to become a licensed traditional acupuncturist, many further years of practice to become reasonably proficient, and several decades to master.
This is because the practice of traditional acupuncture requires the development of skills and sensitivities that take many years to mature. Ideally this continuous training happens under the guidance and supervision of an acknowledged master practitioner.
Such a master acupuncturist will have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to treat a broad spectrum of acute and chronic conditions with a very high rate of success over an extended period of time. They may or may not also be profound scholars and have held various senior academic positions, published papers etc. The important thing, at least in the world of Japanese acupuncture, is that they get results - often with patients whom their less experienced colleagues and students have been unable to help.
In the above context the person who has mostly profoundly influenced the way I practise acupuncture is a Japanese master acupuncturist called Masakazu Ikeda sensei (photo above left). Though I'm deeply grateful to the many other teachers who have inspired and encouraged me over the years, Ikeda sensei simply stands head and shoulders above anyone else I have ever observed practicing acupuncture.
This is not just about his exceptional abilities to diagnose and treat all manner of disease conditions, but about the detail and depth of his understanding, his ability to communicate and teach his mastery to his students, and his extraordinary humility and compassion. He was practicing acupuncture literally before I was born!
Having only been practicing traditional acupuncture for a mere 20 years I'm still a "novice" by Ikeda sensei's standards. A simple way in which I measure my progress is that I am now able to help patients with conditions I struggled to treat successfully when I was less experienced.
I am enormously grateful to all the students, teachers and patients who have taught me so much over the years.

Visitors to this site for whom Oriental medicine and acupuncture are unfamiliar subjects are encouraged to read the FAQ (frequently asked questions) page. This page will answer most of the questions people ask when first enquiring about acupuncture treatment.
The greater part of this site's content attempts to introduce some of the foundation understandings of Traditional Japanese Acupuncture and the Taoist Healing Arts, including Chi Gung, Meditation and Breathwork. My intention was to offer material to which patients can be referred to in order to support and expand upon the information I frequently only have time to touch upon during treatments.
This information is helpful in providing a context to the treatments patients receive, for while one doesn't have to understand Oriental medicine in order to benefit from it, absorbing some of the key concepts is always valuable. Not least because these pragmatic wisdoms can be put to immediate use in our everyday lives.
I hope you will find my site's content interesting and informative.
